Urban Paramedics have Higher Hepatitis C Infection Rate than General Population

Recent findings presented at the Frontline Healthcare Workers Safety Foundation National Conference indicate that pre-hospital care providers, and more specifically, urban paramedics, have a higher hepatitis C virus (HCV) average infection rate than the general population.

The findings appear to be at odds with results presented in the July 28, 2000, issue of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publication, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, that showed first responders (paramedics, firefighters, emergency room technicians) are at low risk for HCV transmission via needlestick injury or other exposure to blood (see also Hepatitis Weekly,...
