Technology Allows Researchers to Match Hepatitis E Strains in 1983 Outbreak

The development of new technologies has enabled scientists at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center to identify hepatitis E virus isolates from an outbreak in Namibia that had been stored since 1983.

According to the U.S. army researchers, the isolates can be linked to subtypes of HEV that have been identified in other parts of Africa. A report on their findings was published in the Journal of Biomedical Science.

Hepatitis E virus is found in many regions on the African continent. It is has been reported in Egypt, Chad, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, stated J.K. He et al.
