Treatment Increases Autoantibodies in Some HCV Patients

According to researchers at the University of Padua in Italy, a small percentage of hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients will have increased autoantibodies for cells and hormones produced in the pancreas or the thyroid following interferon (IFN) therapy.

Some previous reports have indicated an increased incidence of autoimmune diseases in HCV patients. The goal of C. Betterle and colleagues was to determine whether HCV patients in Italy would have a higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases or autoantibodies following treatment with IFN-alpha.
