Cytokine Upregulation and Cell Desensitization Key to Endotoxemia

The increased expression of certain pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines along with the desensitization of immune effector cells is most likely the cause of a limited response to endotoxins in people with alcoholic liver cirrhosis, suggests a new study.

V. Von Baehr and colleagues at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, studied a number of serum pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines as well as tumor necrosis factor receptors on the immune response cells of alcoholic cirrhosis patients.
