Study Questions Validity of AST/ALT Ratio to Predict Liver Disease in HCV Patients

Findings of a recent study suggest the aspartate amino-transferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio may not be as valid a predictor of cirrhosis in hepatitis C patients as previously reported.

Studies have shown a positive predictive value of 100% for diagnosis of cirrhosis in these patients if the aspartate amino-transferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio (AAR) is {{>=}} 1. The motivation for the current study was the reasoning that liver biopsy may not be necessary to diagnose cirrhosis in hepatitis C patients if an AAR {{>=}} 1 was "validated on separate cohorts," researchers said.
