Lung Inflammation Can Occur Shortly After Procedure

- by Sonia Nichols, staff medical writer -- A severe inflammatory response in the lungs sometimes follows a technique called hepatic cryoablation. Researchers at Vanderbilt University have performed studies that shed new light on the reason why.

Mechanisms involved in the process include the production of nuclear factor-alpha B dependent cytokines, according to researchers.

"Serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP-2) levels are markedly increased one hour and beyond after cryo (cryoablation) compared with partial hepatectomy where no elevation occurs," stated Kay Washington and colleagues.
