Virology Makes Difference in Development of More Liver Tumors after Treatment

- by Sonia Nichols, staff medical writer -- A Japanese study reports that virology is a significant factor for tumor recurrence after initial treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Individuals who have hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) are at an increased risk for developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). These patients, researchers say, are subject to experiencing HCC recurrence faster than patients with non-HCV or non-HBV HCC.

The study, reported in the journal Hepatology, evaluated 236 patients who underwent either surgical resection or tumor ablation therapies for HCC between 1993 and 1997. At the time of the initial...
