Cells Lack Growth Factor Receptors, Escape Inhibitory Signals

by Sonia Nichols, staff medical writer -- Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are lacking significant levels of a special growth factor receptor on their liver cells. The lack of this receptor, transforming growth factor-beta receptor type II (T beta RII), most likely enables cells to keep growing that ordinarily would not.

T. Ueno et al. of Kurume University Medical School examined cell cultures and human liver tissue samples for T beta RII protein expression and induced apoptosis in transfected liver cancer cells. The researchers first studied T beta RII expression in tissues from patients with HCC, cirrhosis, or chronic hepatitis.
