Liver Enzyme Test Inadequate For Screening Patients For HCV

by Sonia Nichols, staff medical writer - Researchers report elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is of no use for screening hemodialysis patients for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections.

Patients on hemodialysis (HD) face an increased risk for acquiring HCV. Doctors advise that HD patients be screened for HCV with tests that measure ALT, say investigators at the University of California at Los Angeles. However, these researchers advise ALT levels, used to detect inadequate liver function, are of no value for screening HD patients for viral hepatitis.
