Coated Tegafur/Uracil Improves Survival in Inoperable Cases

by Sonia Nichols, staff medical writer - Although patients with unresectable stage IV-A liver cancers have a poor prognosis, new research indicates enteric-coated tegafur/uracil could extend survival for some of them.

Hepatitis B or C viruses, alcoholic cirrhosis, and liver toxins are the most frequent causes of primary liver cancer, or hepatocellular carcinoma.

Patients with unresectable stage IV-A hepatocellular carcinoma have relatively few chemotherapeutic treatment options. However, researchers in Japan now say that enteric-coated tegafur/uracil could significantly prolong survival for a number of these patients.
