Study Urges Stronger Testing For Hepatitis B In Prospective Liver Donors

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Screening tests used for selecting prospective liver donors in the United Kingdom are insufficient, warn researchers at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

"Although the use of donor organs from patients negative for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) but positive for hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb) is well known to have the potential to transmit hepatitis B to the recipient, routine screening of organ donors for HBcAb is not yet implemented in the U.K.," said D.J. Mutimer and colleagues.
