Human Herpesvirus 6 Prevalent In Children with Non-B Non-C Hepatitis

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Scientists report pediatric patients with non-B non-C hepatitis and other liver diseases are frequently infected with human herpesvirus (HHV)-6, but its role in causing hepatitis cannot be assumed.

More often than not, a genetic form of the virus called HHV-6B infects the children, a cohort study performed in Japan suggests.

In a study of 48 children with serum-positive evidence of HHV-6, the strain HHV-6B was detected in liver biopsy samples of 36 patients. Furthermore, investigators found that strain in the peripheral blood cells of 70% of 31 tested patients with liver-positive HHV-6B, and approximately...
