New Compound Holds Anti-Hepatitis B Treatment Promise

A new compound has been shown to be active against the hepatitis B virus (HBV) in laboratory experiments, the Hepatitis B Foundation announced June 7, 2001.

The drug, called AlkovirTM, is a variant of natural sugars. Its mechanism of action is under investigation, but it appears to work in a different manner than the other hepatitis B drugs in use.

"This means we may have a new pathway of vulnerability to pursue against the disease," said Timothy Block, PhD, Hepatitis B Foundation. "We're extremely encouraged by the prospect of Alkovir emerging as a new weapon against hepatitis B."
