Laboratory-Based Surveillance Might Detect HBV Outbreaks Faster

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - The authors of a new study about HBV outbreaks caused by injection drug use in Denmark suggest that laboratory-based surveillance may be useful for identifying those outbreaks earlier.

P.B. Christensen and associates at Odense University Hospital in Denmark reviewed public health, laboratory, hospital, and clinician reports of HBV infections in one county in Denmark before proposing the surveillance policy changes in a report in the August 2001 edition of the Journal of Clinical Virology.
