Malnutrition Predicts Survival In Liver Cirrhosis

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Scientists believe malnutrition is a predictive indicator for long-term outcomes in patients with liver cirrhosis, based on a study of more than 200 hospitalized patients.

Liver cirrhosis, characterized by nodule formation in the liver, is caused by a number of factors, including viral hepatitis, exposure to alcohol and other liver toxins, chronic diseases such as diabetes, and even malnutrition. Liver damage is usually permanent, and liver transplantation may be the only viable treatment alternative.
