Company Launches Safer Disposable Syringe And Needle

An Australian company unveiled a new disposable needle and syringe aimed at cutting the threat of injuries caused by needles discarded by intravenous drug users.

Harm Reduction Services (HRS) designed the Sterafit, an all-in-one needle, syringe, and safety disposal tube unit. Once it has been inserted and locked into the disposal tube, the used needle is bent and crushed so it cannot be exposed or reused.

Twenty known pathogens can be transmitted through needle injuries, including HIV and hepatitis C. In some areas of Sydney, where heroin use has exploded in recent years, injuries from discarded needles are a common risk.
