Fibrosis Associated With Viral Hepatitis Linked To Thrombocytopenia

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - New research points to hepatic fibrosis as a source of thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic viral hepatitis.

A study of splenomegaly, thrombocytopenia, liver status, and thrombopoietin serum levels in 209 patients with viral hepatitis shows that advanced liver fibrosis affects thrombopoietin production and portal hypertension, researchers at the Second University of Naples, Italy, reported in the British Journal of Haematology.

"Thrombocytopenia was present in 71% and 23% of patients with or without splenomegaly, respectively," reported L.E. Adinolfi and colleagues, who also highlighted findings...
