Blood Donors Who Appear Healthy Could Still Transmit Hepatitis B

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Some healthy blood donors who have serum antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) but who are hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) free should be precluded from donating blood due to the slight possibility they could still transmit infection.

Anti-HBc, remaining evident in laboratory tests after hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has cleared, is a marker for previous infection in patients who are HBsAg-negative. "Recent studies have revealed that HBV may not be cleared even after the disappearance of serum HBsAg," stated Hiroshi Yotsuyanagi and colleagues, St. Marianna University School of Medicine in Japan. ...
