Lactoferrin Fights Off Cell-Associated Hepatitis

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - A recombinant form of the human breast milk protein lactoferrin can combat phagocytic liver cells sensitized to produce hepatitis.

Thus far, lactoferrin inhibition of sensitized Kupffer cells has only been proven in murine models, but researchers believe the recombinant protein, which has antibacterial and antifungal properties, could also be used for treating human hepatic disease.

Makoto Yamaguchi and associates at the Nutrition Science Institute of Meiji Dairies Corporation in Japan performed the series of animal model experiments, in which they administered recombinant lactoferrin to mice a day before...
