Chronic Viral Liver Disease Rising Among HIV-Infected Population

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - An analysis of HIV cases in Madrid, Spain, has shown a steady rise in the number of patients admitted to the hospital because of chronic viral liver disease (CVLD).

In fact, in the year 2000 nearly half of the deaths among hospitalized individuals infected with HIV were due to end-stage liver disease, investigators said recently in a new report, suggesting more could be done in terms of promoting hepatitis B virus vaccinations and using aggressive treatment regimens for HIV-infected patients coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV).
