Study Review Cites Low Risk For Hepatitis A In Workers With Sewage Exposure

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Citing information gathered from a systematic review of 17 studies, researchers in Switzerland have concluded workers exposed to sewage stand very little risk for acquiring hepatitis A virus (HAV) infections.

Investigators at the University of Zurich in Switzerland performed the statistical evaluation of the several studies although a full-blown meta-analysis could not be performed due to study heterogeneity. They reported in the December 2001 issue of Occupational and Environmental Medicine that there is very little data to support a link between occupational exposure to sewage and HAV.
