Antibodies Protect Liver Graft Recipients From Viral Reactivation

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Patients receiving livers that were once infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) can be prevented from acquiring viral infection themselves by receiving preventative treatments prior to or during the time of transplantation.

The demand for donated livers far exceeds the available supply. Because of this fact, some doctors have turned to alternative sources for livers, including using ones from people with resolved viral hepatitis B. Such livers can transmit HBV infection to liver transplant recipients if the necessary precautions are not taken, doctors say.
