Nevirapine And Co-Risk Factors Affect Livers In HIV Patients

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - A class of drugs used for treating patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may increase the risk for liver dysfunction when certain other factors are also present.

"Recently, the use of HIV-1 specific non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), including nevirapine (NVP) and efavirenz (EFV), has been associated with severe hepatic injury," Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland researchers said in Hepatology.

The Johns Hopkins team, lead by Mark S. Sulkowski of the Department of Medicine, has completed a prospective study of more than 500 HIV positive patients...
