Therapeutic effectiveness can be predicted early in chronic hepatitis C

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - In as little as 2 weeks, doctors can predict whether or not an individual with chronic hepatitis C will respond to interferon therapy, medical researchers in Japan report.

"We conducted a prospective, controlled, multicenter trial to assess if earlier changes of serum hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA levels were predictable for long-term effect, and if a short-term therapy was effective in such patients," S. Kakumu and coauthors said in the February 2002 issue of Hepatology Research.
