Drinking alcohol doubles the risk for liver cancer in hepatitis patients

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - A new study of 464 men and women with hepatocellular carcinoma, a primary form of liver cancer, has provided more evidence that drinking can heighten the risk for cancer formation in patients with either hepatitis C or B virus (HCV, HBV).

The study, which included the 464 cases with liver cancer as well as 824 male and female controls without liver disease, was conducted by a multicenter team in Italy.

Statistical analysis showed that those who drank more than 60 grams of alcohol per day had a higher risk for developing liver cancer, with male and female group members bearing approximately the same risk,...
