Rising papillomavirus-related oral warts rate may be positive sign

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - The incidence of oral warts is rising in HIV infected patients although this may actually be a positive sign, according to researchers in the United States.

"Oral warts are a manifestation of human papillomavirus infection that have been noted infrequently in persons with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)," explained Dr. Mark D. King and colleagues at the Emory University School of Medicine and Grady Health System in Atlanta.

Although oral warts are becoming more common in HIV patients, this may reflect the efficacy of antiretroviral therapy, King and coauthors said.
