Therapies extend use of often-rejected livers for patient transplantation

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Giving liver transplant recipients hepatitis B immune globulin and long-term antiviral therapy can allow them to receive transplanted livers from donors who are hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb) positive without their developing hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, university investigators suggest.

Based on a retrospective analysis of outcomes in the recipients of such livers, and contrary to common practice, researchers at Loyola University - Chicago, which is located in Chicago, Illinois, have proposed that using HBcAb positive liver grafts is okay, as long as certain therapies are also prescribed for the patient.
