Reused needles infect at least 19

A Brooklyn, New York anesthesiologist apparently infected at least 19 patients with hepatitis C last year by improperly reusing hypodermic needles, the city Health Department found.

A Health Department report found that Dr. Marvin Chiumento, then an anesthesiologist at the Bay Ridge Endoscopy and Digestive Health Center, probably caused the outbreak by reusing a vial of medication and needles that had been infected by a procedure on a patient with hepatitis C.

The investigation was reported July 3, 2002, in Newsday, which obtained the department's 22-page report on the outbreak through a Freedom of Information Act request.
