New virus may be prognostic marker for chronic hepatitis C-related liver cancer

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - TT virus, also known as transfusion transmitted virus, may be a marker for cancer progression in people with chronic hepatitis C-related liver disease.

TT virus (TTV) was discovered only a few years ago. Despite growing evidence that suggests TTV is fairly common among individuals with and without liver disease, a new report by medical researchers at Jichi Medical School in Japan indicates TTV may predict the risk for hepatocellular carcinoma, a primary form of liver cancer, in those with chronic hepatitis C. Its effect on cancer progression in those individuals remains unknown.
