Vaccination now required for elementary, secondary school enrollment

New Mexico and Mississippi join 38 states (plus the District of Columbia) that now require the chickenpox vaccine for day care, public school, or both. In addition, several states now have similar legislation requiring chickenpox vaccination for children entering preschool, kindergarten, or other grades.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends vaccination for chickenpox (varicella) along with measles, mumps, rubella, polio, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib).
