Cytokine imbalance detected in livers of fulminant hepatitis B patients

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Cellular factors that control the body's response to infection tend to become imbalanced in the livers of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected patients, new research has revealed.

Scientists at the University of Bonn in Germany have used staining techniques to study the balance of interleukin (IL)-10, IL-12, and interferon (IFN) gamma in the livers of adult HBV-positive patients. Insufficient counterbalancing of the three cytokines tends to promote liver inflammation, the researchers suggest.
