Hepatitis C virus genotype distribution in northeast Italy studied

Researchers in Italy have characterized the distribution of hepatitis C virus (HCV) subtypes in the northeastern region of the country.

Study subjects were 318 consecutive HCV RNA positive patients.

Among the findings:

  • "Subtype 1b infection was the most prevalent (35.5%), followed by subtype 1 a (22%),3a (21.4%) and 2 genotype (21.3%)."

  • "Subtypes la, 1b, and 3a had a comparable prevalence (30-35%) in the 0-15-, 16-30-, and 31-45-year age groups."
