Slowly tapering off steroids protects graft against hepatitis C recurrence

Long-term corticosteroid treatment after liver transplant, decreased slowly over time, appears to prevent aggressive, recurrent hepatitis C, say gastroenterologists in Italy.

To determine what factors may increase or decrease risk of recurrence, S. Brillanti and colleagues, University of Bologna, analyzed clinical records of 80 patients positive for hepatitis C virus (HCV) who had liver disease. The patients had been followed up for a median 45 months post-transplantation.

"Diagnosis of recurrent chronic hepatitis C was made in 38 patients (47.5%), of whom 22 had moderate/severe chronic hepatitis. Decompensated cirrhosis occurred in six patients...
