Virus thrives in sweat glands of chronic hepatitis C patients

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Physicians in Spain have found hepatitis C virus (HCV) is released in sweat.

Not only is the virus released in sweat, but it can replicate in sweat glands, according to Nuria Ortiz-Movilla and other members of a multicenter investigation team in Madrid, Spain.

Ortiz-Movilla and coauthors, researchers at the Foundation for the Study of Viral Hepatitis in Madrid, Spain, tested the sweat glands and skin cells of 15 HCV-positive patients and 10 HCV-negative volunteers with chronic liver disease for HCV RNA and HCV core protein.
