Study finds link between HCV genotype 3 and hepatic steatosis

Hepatologists at the University of Sydney reported study data they think "provide strong support for a direct causal association between hepatitis C virus genotype 3 infection and hepatic steatosis."

"On the basis of cross-sectional studies, it has been proposed that hepatic steatosis is a cytopathic effect of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 3 but not genotype 1 infections. We tested this hypothesis by examining whether antiviral treatment altered hepatic steatosis in chronic hepatitis C," said D. Kumar and colleagues.
