Liver transplantation feasible in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients

Liver transplantation can be feasible for patients infected with both HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV).

"The prognosis of HIV infection has been modified by antiretroviral therapy," scientists in France explained. "However, the morbidity and the mortality of HCV co-infection are increased and may be a major problem of health service."

"Up to now co-infected patients are excluded" from liver transplantation "due to complexity the ethical aspect, the immunodeficiency and the co-infection," noted D. Vittecoq and colleagues at Paul Brousse Hospital in Villejuif, who conducted a study to "estimate the feasibility in this population."
