Infection rate in a Midwestern community is dependent on the country of origin

A new study has examined the prevalence of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) in a small Midwestern population and found that immigrants from HBV-endemic parts of the world made up the majority of cases.

The study is published in Hepatology.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the number of newly acquired HBV infections has been declining in the United States since the mid-1980s. However, national surveys have shown the actual prevalence of the infection has increased. These studies have also shown a striking variability in prevalence by race and ethnicity.
