Interferon/ribavirin therapy can be safe, but sustained response remains low

Patients who are infected with both HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) can be safely treated for the latter infection with a combination of ribavirin (RBV) and interferon alpha-2b (IFN), according to a new study. However, adverse effects such as anemia contributed to a high dropout rate, which prevented more widespread treatment success.

Hepatitis C is often seen in combination with HIV infection, especially in intravenous drug users, or recipients of tainted blood, and co-infection leads to worse outcomes.
