Transcript profiling can be used to distinguish different classes of toxicants.

In a study from Switzerland, "[m]ale rats were treated with various model compounds or the appropriate vehicle controls. Most substances were either well-known hepatotoxicants or showed hepatotoxicity during preclinical testing."
