Pre-emptive therapy is effective after liver transplantation

According to recent research from Sweden, pegylated interferon and ribavirin preemptive therapy is effective after liver transplantation for hepatitis C virus (HCV) cirrhosis.

"We present our results of preemptive treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin after liver transplantation for hepatitis C cirrhosis. Between September 2001 and August 2002, four patients were started on combination therapy with pegylated interferon-alpha-2b (1 mcg/kg weekly) and ribavirin (400-1000 mg/d) 3 to 4 weeks' posttransplant. Treatment was continued for 6 (genotype 3a, 2 patients) or 12 (genotype 1b, 2 patients) months."
