Stellate cell apoptosis is promoted by a soluble hepatocyte mediator

A recent study from the United States has reported that stellate cell apoptosis is promoted by a soluble mediator from immortalized human hepatocytes (IHH).

"Activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are the major source of extracellular matrix in fibrosis and cirrhosis. In this study, we have investigated the role of hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein induced IHH on HSC growth," wrote A. Basu and colleagues, St. Louis University.
