Defective hepatitis C virus clones identified in liver transplant recipients

Recent research from Japan has reported on the identification of defective hepatitis C virus (HCV) clones in liver transplant recipients with recurrent HCV infection.

"Patients with recurrent hepatitis C after liver transplantation usually have a high viral load and are generally resistant to interferon (IFN)-alpha 2b plus ribavirin (RBV) therapy. However, it remains unclear whether pretreatment viral titer determines the effectiveness of combination therapy, especially in patients with a high viral load.
