RNA synthesis template positioning controlled by viral diarrhea virus polymerase

Recent research from Canada published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry has documented the control of template positioning during de novo initiation of RNA synthesis by the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) NS5B polymerase.

"The RNA-dependent RNA polymerase of the hepatitis C virus and the BVDV is able to initiate RNA synthesis de novo in the absence of a primer. Previous crystallographic data have pointed to the existence of a GTP-specific binding site (G-site) that is located in the vicinity of the active site of the BVDV enzyme.
