Studies from National Institute of Infectious Disease, Infectious Diseases Department further understanding of hepatitis C virus

Research findings, 'Virological characterization of the hepatitis C virus JFH-1 strain in lymphocytic cell lines,' are discussed in a new report. "While hepatocytes are the major site of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, a number of studies have suggested that HCV can replicate in lymphocytes. However, in vitro culture systems to investigate replication of HCV in lymphocytic cells are severely limited," scientists writing in the Journal of General Virology report.
