Investigators at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research release new data on hepatitis C virus

Data detailed in 'Elevation of interleukin-18 in chronic hepatitis C: implications for hepatitis C virus pathogenesis' have been presented. According to a study from Chandigarh, India, "The outcome of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is determined by the interplay between the virus and the host immune response. Interleukin (IL)-18, an interferon-gamma-inducing factor, plays a critical role in the T helper type 1 (Th1) response required for host defence against viruses, and antibodies to IL-18 have been found to prevent liver damage in a murine model."
