Rural pharmacies say insurers squeezing them out of business

Independent pharmacists in west-central Minnesota say large health insurance companies are unfairly squeezing them out of business, and that rural consumers will ultimately suffer by losing local access to prescription drugs.

Dave Arneson of Arneson Synder Drug in Montevideo said the rural healthcare network is at risk.

"I don't think we're going to be gone tomorrow, but the day after I'm not so sure," Mike Fritz, pharmacist and owner of Clara City Drug and Gift, told State Sen. Gary Kubly, DFL-Granite Falls, and State Rep. Lyle Koenen, DFL-Maynard. Fritz was among a dozen independent pharmacists who met with the lawmakers on February 6, 2004.
