Montanans support cigarette tax increase for improving healthcare

Seven out of 10 Montanans support a more than doubling of the state cigarette tax, so long as the money would be used to improve access to health care, according to poll results released February 9, 2004, by health and anti-tobacco groups.

The survey, paid for by the organizations, also found about two-thirds of those questioned would like to see proceeds from a $1-per-pack tax increase used to expand a program providing health insurance to poor children and to make prescription drugs more affordable.
