Judge upholds approval for West Virginia hospital plans

The West Virginia Health Care Authority acted within its powers when it approved United Hospital Center's plans to build a $265 million replacement hospital in Harrison County, not far from a competing hospital in Marion County, a state administrative law judge has ruled.

Martha Hill upheld a state certificate of need for United Hospital Center and West Virginia United Health System Inc., accepting the hospital's argument that building a replacement facility eight miles from Clarksburg was not inconsistent with the state's Health Plan.

The HCA approved the certificate of need for the hospital on October 24.
