South Beach clinics charged for fraudulent Medicare claims

Two short-lived South Beach Miami, Florida, AIDS clinics were paid $5.4 million on false Medicare claims for potent intravenous drugs that were either not provided, not given as claimed or not medically necessary, prosecutors charged.

Patients took kickbacks as part of a scheme that billed Medicare $200 to $500 for each dose of the infection-fighting drug Neupogen and anemia-fighting Procrit, federal prosecutors said in a 31-count indictment. Both drugs are colorless liquids.

The clinic owners, three staff doctors and four other employees were indicted on fraud conspiracy charges carrying a possible 5-year prison sentence. The doctors and employees...
