Intracardiac echocardiography useful in perimembranous defect closure

Use of intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) may enable perimembranous ventricular septal defect (PMVSD) closure without general endotracheal anesthesia.

For several years, ICE "has been employed successfully in guiding transcatheter device closure of a secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) or patent foramen ovale (PFO)," cardiologists in the United States explained. However, "nothing is known regarding the use of ICE to guide catheter device closure" of a PMVSD.
